For years I suffer from acne, not just in my teenager years but, into
adulthood. I was told varies thoughts and advice from hormones, stress or
not properly washing my face. I agree most of these things could
contribute to the acne but, for some reason I was convince it was not the
cause. In 2012 I broke out terrible with pimples all around my t-zone and
was extremely frustrated. I was not under any stress and cleanse my faces
thoroughly and my hormones were pretty much under control. I decide to go see a dermatologist
that recommended creams and gels that had ingredients I could not pronounce or had harse chemical, such as steroids, No way! I researched several
things that could have caused the acne and kept a daily dairy of my food/liquid
intake and stress and hormone levels. Here is what I noticed and
learned.
Sugar is a carbohydrate, made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Sugar
has many names such as maltol, ethyl, destran, molasses and maltodextrin (found
in a lot of salad dressings). Sugar binds to the skin's proteins and lipids and mess with your collagen and elastin, which will make skin not have that bounce, tone and look dull. High intakes of sugar is will increase oil in skin causing acne. High Fructose is the worse of sweetener and
found in just about everything. Fructose messes with your hormones including
your appetite. Agave is very high in fructose as well, but made naturally. In 2012 I was
digesting a lot of fructose that could have been a contributor to my
acne. Sugar has about 50 % fructose and in 2012 I was drinking a lot of
soda, eating a lot of junk and drinking white wines.
Sugar comes in many forms and I believe is not only a common component
to my acne but, a contributor to other things in our health that is not good such as increase
cancer and heart disease risk, gives you wrinkles and makes us age along with ADHD to name a few.
Note, that we do need some sugar, glucose which is our
body's primary source of energy found in carbohydrates. Our body can
break down the glucose and use it for energy. Fructose is found in plants
and is natural. Fructose can be found in honey and fruits/vegetables.
However, this is where it gets tricky when we add fructose and glucose together
then we have High Fructose. High Fructose corn syrup is cheaper than
sugar, so thousands of companies are adding it to their package foods to make
them taste better and more addicting.
Solution~There are other sweeteners out there that does not have high levels or fructose
and can help with our sugar cravings such as honey, molasses, dates, coconut sugar, and maple syrup. Finally, I try to eat/drink very little sugar, I read all labels to find out how many teaspoons of sugar are in a serving, what the serving size is, Also, I switch to full fat dairy and try not to drink any soda. I addition I find alternative ways to sweeten my food and drink such as using dates, maple syrup and coconut sugar. This is not only help my acne but, my sons teenage acne, and both of my children's behavior.
