Should I Buy Organic or Should I Not???

Well, after much debate and conversation here are my thoughts on this one...Today we are all on a limited budget and like me always finding ways to stretch a dollar and save for our future and buying organic may seem silly because we should trust the government and say, to ourselves they would never put food or products on the shelves of our supermarkets that would hurt us, RIGHT? We start analyzing facts and controversies try to decide the best way to spend our money. Well, I have decide it is all a personal choice just like a car, TV and or course food but, before you make that personal choice here is what I know about organics.  Research indicates organic food has twice the nutritional value of conventional food.  Organic food contains less dangerous heavy-metal residues such as aluminum, lead and mercury of conventional food. Most conventional produce contains pesticides that have been determined to cause cancer, along with other serious diseases and allergies.  With a child that battle cancer for almost 4 years I am sorry but, this is not the route I want to travel.

First, the dirty dozen: I try my hardest to buy organic on every fruit and veggie but, to stay in budget I may only buy certain produce organic...

  • peaches
  • apples
  • bell peppers
  • celery
  • nectarines
  • strawberries
  • cherries
  • kale
  • lettuce
  • imported grapes
  • carrots
  • pears

The USDA defines organic as any food produced w/o antibiotics, growth hormones and pesticides. Organic Farms use fertilizers that aren't made w/ synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge... Organic farmers do not zap food with radiation to kill bacteria nor alter plants to make them hardier which in turn makes food the is produce on our land more nutritious.
If you are watching your wallet which I know we all are these days:

Next, These are the veggies and fruits with the lowest amt of pesticides...

  • onions
  • avocado
  • corn
  • pineapple
  • mangoes
  • asparagus
  • sweet peas
  • kiwifruit
  • cabbage
  • eggplant
  • papaya
  • watermelon
  • broccoli
  • tomatoes
  • sweet potatoes

Remember, to always if you can find at local farmers markets and on sale buy Organic.

After watching FOOD INC. here is what I have learned,  buy organic on meat poultry, milk and baby food.
I feel babies eat a lot of baby food and cooking does not get rid of chemicals buy organic or make it using organic produce.

Meat and poultry are pumped with antibiotics to prevent the spread of disease and hormones to speed growth.

Milk, dairy cows are fed growth hormones and antibiotics. Small children drink a lot of milk especially whole milk and the higher the fat content of milk the higher the chemicals in milk.

Finally, if a packages says, organic it does not always mean it is nutritious for your family. It still have high fat, sugar and salt.  Read labels, question ingredients and make a conscience choice of what you are feeding your family and putting in your mouth...
